    About Greenpeace:

Greenpeace is a non-governmental environmental organisation with offices in over 39 countries.

Greenpeace defend the natural world and promote peace by investigating, exposing and confronting environmental abuse, and championing responsible solutions for our fragile environment.

The Challenge: A sustainable electrical solution

Whitton Electrical have carried out multiple projects at the Greenpeace UK’s Head Office in Islington. This has included the ongoing reactive maintenance of Greenpeace facilities and projects such as replacement and upgrade of the Head Office main switchgear.

Our favourite project, however, was being challenged with designing a sustainable electrical solution for the head office and warehouse  which seeks to make use of innovative materials and techniques in line with Greenpeace’s ethos of causing minimal disruption to the environment.

This project made us think creatively about how we source materials and how a regular workplace can take steps to reduce power consumption in a meaningful and sustainable way.

    Outcomes:

Amongst more conventional elements of this project such as updating the main office, warehouse and stores power supplies and upgrading to a more efficient emergency lighting solution, we found multiple ways to help Greenpeace innovate stay true to their core beliefs including:

    • Bespoke design and installation of a custom built wooden cable trunking system. This was used to replace traditional non-sustainable PVC trunking used in the vast majority of electrical installations.
    • The design and installation of low-energy LED lighting throughout the Head Office, with automated and wirelessly controlled daylight harvesting to ensure minimum power consumption is required whilst ensuring the work environment has high quality levels of lighting that ensure employee wellness.
    • Heat harvesting and heat re-distribution from the main server room. Harvested heat is then distributed back into public spaces, lowering energy consumption and creating a more sustainable heating solution for the HQ building.
