London Women’s Clinic – Bristol Branch

The Challenge

London Women’s Clinic required a resilient critical power solution to protect essential clinical equipment and maintain continuity of service during mains power interruptions at their branch in Bristol.

The project involved significant alterations to the existing electrical infrastructure within a fully operational healthcare facility. Maintaining clinical services and minimising disruption to patients and staff were essential throughout the programme.

The client needed a solution capable of supporting business-critical systems, allowing safe planned maintenance and integrating with an emergency generator as part of a wider disaster-recovery strategy.


Our Solution

Whitton Electrical carefully planned and phased the electrical works so the clinic could remain operational throughout the installation.

A bespoke critical power solution was designed and installed, incorporating an online UPS system, dedicated critical-power distribution and maintenance bypass arrangements.

The UPS was integrated with the site’s standby generator, providing immediate protection during short-term disturbances and continued support during prolonged mains failures.

Remote monitoring was also installed to provide real-time system visibility and automatically issue alarms and status notifications to nominated personnel in the event of:

How do you determine the correct size for a commercial UPS system?

We also consider whether the UPS needs to support the load until the mains returns, until a generator starts or for long enough to complete a controlled shutdown.

What is an online UPS?

An online UPS continuously supplies the connected equipment through its power-conversion system.

This provides a stable output and immediate protection from mains interruption or disturbance without relying on a delayed transfer between operating modes. Online UPS systems are commonly used where continuity and power quality are particularly important, including healthcare, communications, data, laboratory and business-critical environments.

How long will a commercial UPS installation keep our equipment running?

UPS runtime depends on the size of the protected load, battery capacity, battery condition and the autonomy specified during the design stage.

Some commercial UPS installations are intended to bridge only the short period before a generator starts. Others are designed to provide longer battery support or enough time for equipment to be shut down safely.

Can a UPS be integrated with a standby generator?

What is a maintenance bypass?

A maintenance bypass provides an alternative electrical route around the UPS.

Can you replace an existing UPS without shutting down critical equipment?
