Existing Commercial Emergency Lighting Systems
Commercial Emergency lighting is often overlooked until it is needed. Changes to building layouts, ageing batteries and poor maintenance can leave escape routes inadequately protected during an emergency evacuation.
✓ Emergency lighting not covering altered escape routes.
✓ Failed batteries reducing emergency duration.
✓ Damaged or missing emergency luminaires.
✓ Monthly functional testing not being completed.
✓ Annual full-duration testing overdue.
✓ Incorrect positioning of emergency fittings following refurbishments.
✓ Escape route signage no longer suitable.
✓ Inadequate illumination levels.
✓ Older fittings consuming unnecessary energy.
✓ No automatic monitoring of emergency lighting performance.

Commercial Emergency Lighting – Case Study
Eden Shopping Centre, High Wycombe
As part of the redevelopment of the former House of Fraser department store at Eden Shopping Centre, Jardak Services appointed Whitton Electrical to deliver commercial LED lighting and integrated emergency lighting throughout the building.
The project required two distinct lighting solutions for public and operational areas. Loading bays, plant rooms, service corridors and risers needed robust, low-maintenance fittings capable of performing reliably in a demanding commercial environment. Public circulation areas required a higher-quality architectural finish that complemented the modern redevelopment.
The client also wanted intelligent controls to reduce unnecessary energy use, retain flexibility for future building alterations and allow for optional remote emergency-lighting monitoring. All works had to be coordinated with the wider construction programme and fully commissioned before the building opened to the public.
Whitton Electrical designed and installed a complete commercial LED lighting system incorporating integrated emergency lighting, wireless occupancy sensors and intelligent controls.
Industrial-grade LED luminaires were installed throughout the back-of-house areas, providing durable and energy-efficient illumination for operational spaces. Premium architectural fittings were selected for public circulation areas to deliver the required visual finish without compromising lighting performance.
Occupancy sensors automatically reduced lighting output to approximately 10%, or switched fittings off completely, when areas were unoccupied. This reduced energy consumption while maintaining safe circulation and operational functionality.
An open-protocol control platform was used to support future alterations, additional devices and optional remote emergency-lighting monitoring. Whitton Electrical delivered the works in coordinated phases and completed testing and commissioning ahead of the building opening.
Whitton Electrical delivered an intelligent, energy-efficient LED lighting and emergency lighting solution for a major retail redevelopment, combining robust service-area lighting, premium public-area illumination and a future-ready control platform.
LED lighting upgrade ●Integrated emergency lighting ●Wireless occupancy controls ●Expandable open-protocol system ●Delivered before public opening
The installation was carefully coordinated with the wider redevelopment programme, supporting operational service areas and public spaces without compromising the construction timetable.
Integrated emergency lighting, occupancy sensing and intelligent controls improved life-safety performance while reducing unnecessary energy use across the building.
The open-protocol lighting control system provides a flexible platform for future layout changes, additional devices and optional remote emergency lighting monitoring.
Commercial emergency lighting provides illumination when the normal electrical supply fails. It helps occupants identify escape routes, exits, changes in floor level and other important features while leaving the building safely.
The system may include emergency luminaires, illuminated exit signs and emergency components integrated into the main lighting scheme.
