Bristol UPS Installation – London Women’s Clinic

London Women’s Clinic entrance at Zinc Works in Bristol

Whitton Electrical delivered an integrated UPS and critical power installation at London Women’s Clinic in Bristol while the facility remained operational. The project combined protected electrical distribution, standby generator integration, maintenance bypass and remote monitoring through a carefully phased programme.

The result was a coordinated critical power system designed around the equipment it serves and the people who depend on it.

Project at a glance

  • Client: London Women’s Clinic
  • Location: Bristol
  • Environment: Operational healthcare facility
  • Scope: Online UPS, critical-power distribution, maintenance bypass, generator integration and remote monitoring
  • Delivery: Phased works and coordinated changeovers while the clinic remained operational

The challenge: resilience within a working clinic

The clinic needed dependable protection for essential equipment during mains power interruptions. Achieving that meant making significant changes to the existing electrical infrastructure while taking account of clinical services, staff and patients.

There were several questions to resolve together: how protected power would reach the right equipment, how the system would support longer interruptions, how it could be maintained, and how the client would know when something needed attention.

The approach: plan the changeovers around the client

Whitton Electrical planned and phased the installation with the client. Access and critical changeovers were coordinated around the clinic’s activities, keeping the operational requirements of the building central to the programme.

This planning allowed the electrical infrastructure to be upgraded while the clinic remained in use. It also provided a practical framework for bringing the UPS, distribution, bypass and generator arrangements together.

The installation: an integrated critical power system

  • Immediate protection. An online UPS system provided protection for essential equipment against short-term interruptions and disturbances.
  • Dedicated distribution. Critical-power supplies connected the protected system to the equipment requiring it.
  • Provision for maintenance. Bypass arrangements supported planned servicing of the installation.
  • Support for longer outages. Integration with the site’s standby generator formed part of the wider resilience strategy.
  • Clearer system visibility. Remote monitoring provided alarms and status notifications for mains failure, generator operation, battery issues, bypass operation and system faults.

The outcome: a more complete critical-power strategy

The completed installation combined UPS protection with generator support and monitored distribution. The client gained a coordinated system with visibility of operating conditions and a practical basis for maintenance and fault response.

The clinic remained operational throughout the installation programme. For this project, delivery planning mattered alongside the equipment: the system had to fit into a working healthcare environment as well as meet its power requirements.

Considerations for similar projects

A successful UPS project considers the complete route from the incoming supply to the critical load. Distribution, generator arrangements, maintenance access, monitoring and changeover planning all influence how the installation will work in practice.
