Established in 1985 in Harley Street, the London Women’s Clinic has since pioneered many of the routine techniques used to treat fertility today.

State-of-the-art facilities include on-site laboratories and theatres led by a team of consultants and nursing staff with over 30 years’ experience.

The Challenge: UPS installation

As one of the UK’s leading fertility clinics, London Women’s Clinic provide a critical service to their patients that is hinged around the fertility laboratory and perhaps most importantly, embryonic storage. Given the tremendous value and fragility of these embryos, it is absolutely imperative that the embryo laboratory receives a 100% “always up” power supply.

Whitton Electrical were asked to design and install a new uninterrupted power supply/UPS installation which would provide the clinic with the best possible redundancy systems in case of power loss to the building.

The project was complicated by location, with offices based in listed premises in the centre of London’s Harley Street. Works needed to ensure there was a minimum disruption to the property whilst, as a 24/7 operation, we also needed to be mindful of causing minimum disruption to the client and their activities as well. Working around the client’s needs whilst ensuring a timely delivery within the stricter building regulations that come with listed properties and which would not be present in most other health care environments.

Outcomes:

We undertook the complete installation of a new battery and generator system to ensure 100% uptime of critical paths to the fertility laboratory and embryonic storage in the event of mains power outage. Works included:

• UPS installation
• “Power in the Hour” generator
• Electrical installation upgraded to current standards
• Segregation of individual circuits to provide robust redundancy
• All works were undertaken in a non-invasive capacity exposing the historical property to limited damage

Owing to the success of the UPS installation and maintenance project we have carried out subsequent works including the upgrade of the fire alarm system to include a fully addressable system which provides requirement to the fire officer whilst again causing minimum damage to the building.
